In broad daylight, shameless animators at propaganda radio known as RTLM, called for the annihilation of Tutsis. So very convinced of the efficacity of their masterplan, they often bragged: “Umwana Uzavuka Azabaze Uko Abatutsi Bari Bameze!” (Every child, not yet born, will have to ask how Tutsis were!)
The Tutsi woman was particularly objectified and degraded. She was viewed as a less-than-human-temptress of sorts, and so perceived to have less of a mind and less deserving of moral treatment. Hence, easier to kill and so they tried. Alas, here I am, recounting the facts.
Some examples of the atrocious call of actions on the Radio included:
- “Graves were waiting to be filled”
- “And you people who live … near Rugunga … go out. You will see the cockroaches … encircle them and kill them …”
- “Do not kill those cockroaches with a bullet — cut them to pieces with a machete”.
- “You must go back there and finish them off. The graves are not yet full!”
If my Pastor did not read this and my Christian conscience did not work, I would have cursed the ground they walk on. Nuko Tur’umirwa…
