5 of 54: BLAME NIGERIAN MEN

Dear Friends:
The time has come to blame Nigerian Men. It is they that introduced money to the party. Other men in neighboring African nations would occasionally spend $5 calling cards for their girlfriends or pay $20 towards their girls’ medicine; and everyone lived happily ever after.
But then, Nigeria discovered oil and some of their men amassed riches. These same men introduced money on the dating scene and love gently left the party. The men started paying business class trips for their girls and dropping hundreds of $ for “upkeep”.

The other African girls were no longer content & left to seek greener more dollar-y pastures. They quickly adopted a Nigerian accent and exclaimed: Na love we go chop? Still, one can’t be mad girls are (supposed) gold diggers if one leads with money.

Now, love has lost its seat. If I love you because you give me money OR I love you because you make me look good, then I love me, I don’t love you. Love is pure and is not self-seeking.

Twajyaga he? Iyo twigira Nibature! (Who sent us? Should have had that energy for 5a daybreak prayers.)

-The Only Romantic Left.
XOXO

Olivia, you’ve nailed it! Those that came before us often lived out love stories based on mutual care and respect (or a more in tact illusion lol), but as money became central to relationships, love started to take a back seat. This shift has affected everyone, turning relationships into transactions rather than genuine connections. I appreciate you bringing this conversation to light—it’s a discussion that needs to be had.
