Last year, I endured a large financial change, that is separation. I must give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, ex spouse paid for most everything. However, since money is no determing factor, decisions were made and we are here.
In this America though, if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself in financial ruin in 2 seconds. They distribute credit like pain au chocolat. I don’t have any undergraduate student loans, we thank God. But law school student loans alone total close to a quarter of a million dollars. I mean can you imagine? This is even more of a joke because I was on a partial scholarship early on. Let us laugh together: HAHA (isn’t it funny how hahaha in spanish is jajaja). Be not mistaken, this is not a decision I regret. I attended arguably the most prestigious HBCU in the country, met supreme court justices, visited the white house, debated in Nepal, sat in South African Parliament, broke bread with a professor who marched with Dr. King, heard from those who negotiated Juba Peace Agreements, took Islamic law and ironically got highest grade… Most importantly, met the most brilliant black minds in America. No price tag for that.
Basically the idea is, you are to join a law firm and make your way to partner. Since managing partners can make up to $1Mil/Year, you’ll eventually be set. The pickle is I am not in the private sector, never have been. I am in the philanthropy world now, before that I was in research, before that I was a Public Defender, and before that I was at the World Bank working to end extreme poverty by 2030 (yewe hageze!)Let’s just say they don’t pay a milli in those spaces… It’s not even that I’m so noble, I am just physically unable to continuously fake it at a job I hate. Im very much like the millennials on that point.
In any case, yesterday, I put my big girl panties on and got a financial advisor to guide me in being where I wish to be financially. So yea, its a soon-to-be-debt-free-babe…250k+? Tiny affair for black Jesus.
XOXO
