TWEGERANE

**Calls Daddy on a Random Thurs. AM**
Dad: You know, I wanted to call you earlier but I said “these are working hours, reka nekuba nkaba daddy badasobanutse banze kurekura abana.” (Let me not be like the overbearing parents that refuse to let children breathe and explore).

Dearest Friends; today, I woke up with twegerane on my mind. Ever heard of Twegerane (Rwanda)? Matatu (Uganda)? Chapa (Mozambique)? These mini-buses constitute the main mode of transportation in Africa. They are often super decked up with pictures of random American rappers like 50Cent or International Ball Players like Ronaldo. Much to the dismay of the elders, the music is always blasting. Inside, they have what in Rwanda we call “convoyeur”. This person is charged with getting clients as quickly as possible. Their goal is to maximize profit and they couldn’t care less about your comfort. If the bus has 12 seats, 15 people will be squeezed in. If you dare open your mouth to complain, the man (I have yet to see a women convoyeur) will legit ignore you. His silence will be to say “because of 100RWF (10c) you want to debate me?” The problem is you need him AND he knows you need him!

I asked dad when’s the last time he went in a Twegerane. He recalled a precise time in 2014. One of the principle tenants of Jehovah Witnesses is the call to preach to others. There is a strong emphasis on modesty so you have to ditch your car. Its a super humbling experience that isn’t for the weak. As always, I listened, in awe of my father before I excused myself so I could resume work.

Later that evening, I attended an African watch party near Atlanta, to witness VP Kamala officially accept nomination. The setup was in an African-owned restaurant. Some of the speakers included local African politicians. I’m so proud to be witnessing history! I am no democrat, I am no republican, I am a humanitarian who traditionally votes third party. However, I take great exception when a black person runs (as that tends to happen once a decade.) In the words of the Great Issa Rae “I’m rooting for everybody black.” Do with your vote what your wish.

XOXO
