AUNTY REGINE, CLASS PERSONIFIED

Dopamine levels elevated, I’m still high from seeing my family. Like many African families, our family occupies nearly all continents. This is the tale of many African families who leave to seek greener pastures. (Though we are working hard to combat brain drain and are returning slowly.) In African family structures there is no distinction drawn between extended family and nuclear family; family is family. Genga, for instance, is not my niece, she is my daughter.

My family is full of powerful matriarchs. Today, I will tell you of my father’s sister: Tantine Régine (Considered Cousin In the West.)Tantine Régine is grand and majestic and is renown for her spectacular beauty. A beauty that has not faded, many children and grandchildren later.

More meaningful than external beauty is the grace and poise she demonstrates in spite of life’s challenges. Her unwavering faith in God and pure motherly love has us all in awe. Toi, ma tante, es notre heroine préférée. Tiens bon, ibyiza birimbere!
