الله أكبر It seems to me that Islam is becoming a bit of a trend. Suddenly seeing lots of new converts and lots of Mecca visits on my socials. And I kinda sorta like it… My problem with the West has always been: Morality is dead. Humanity is dead. God is dead. In the West, it is all about almighty “self”. Which, I am afraid, has been linked to elevated levels rates of depression/suicide ideations. So if discipline, piety, charity can made cool and fashionable, by all means let us all hop on that trend!!! We’ve seen worse trends.
Plus, the fascination isn’t hard to understand. I’ve always admired Islam myself. My favorite country in the world is Sénégal which has a strong Muslim population of 97.2%. I hate to quote Marodi TV as my source but until I make it to Dakar and kiss the ground, it is in fact my source. Anyway, their shows have exposed me to some beautiful Islamic practices like “Adhan” which is the call to prayer that happens 5X times a day and can be heard over the city as a reminder to go pray. (Fun Fact: Mineappolis became first city in US last year to allow this —- Troubling, because if US Constitution permits Freedom of Religion and this is an important tenet of Islam, it should be allowed in ALL 50 states.)
For me, I realized my fascination was more with how Arabic sounds and how Boubous/Kaftans look as opposed to a religious awakening of sorts. All in All, I do have to convey my utmost respects to all my Muslim Brothers & Sisters who are some of the most pious people I’ve seen. Mashallah!
PS: Do I have a Quran? Yes. (Gift from my Islamic Law Professor). Will I convert? No.
