Have you heard of the Alliance of Sahel States (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger). They are on everyone lips in Panafrican circles. They kicked out French troops, ended military cooperation with former colonial powers, and for that we say “Alhamdulillah”. Africans everywhere are re-energized, our dignity is slowly being restored, so we chant “Amandla, Ngawethu”, “The Power is Ours.” (South African cry)
Most famous of all is Ibrahim Traoré; youngest head of state, affectionately known as “Capitaine IB” by his countrymen. Man has done incredibly work in his nation, like the upcoming construction of the first gold refinery. In fact, he has been dubbed Sankara’s Reincarnation. Obviously, many similarities. Both Military officers. Both Young President. Similar Aesthetic (Red Beret). However, I recall Sankara being famous for his ultra-simple lifestyle. He is said to have biked to work every day for example. He even banned air conditioning in government offices/ homes of politicians and ordered the sale of government luxury vehicles in order to reduce costs for the nation.

Additionally, there is the “coup” question… Some criticize the fact that he initially promised to restore civilian rule within two years and organize elections. Now, 2.5 years later, deadline has been extended to 5 years, and there are no elections in sight. Others say, Africa mustn’t abide by western ideals of democracy. They are argue that 65% of Burkina’s population cannot read or write and they are to be entrusted with electing a Head of State? We are not there yet. We must solve the illiteracy problem first.
All in All, Capitaine IB appears to be a brilliant leader in his own right who is likely an adept Sankarist, as we all are. But reincarnation? I don’t see it. Do you?
