Two Years Ago, A Rwandan Man in the community was arrested by the FBI for committing crimes against humanity, gravest of which: genocide.
First I was enraged to know he had been hiding in plain, sight, big chilling, eating Pizza for 30+ years. Then I was enraged to watch his family rally, with ugly cheap T-Shirts, on the basis of NOTHING, screaming that all accusations were falsified and all witness testimony was erroneous. Then I was enraged by the SILENCE and complicity of some in the name of self-preservation. Then- the craziest thing happened…
When I shared with dad and other trusted elders, all chuckled in amusement and called my rage disproportionate. They’d say “Chouchou chérie (our darling daughter), you’re angry because you met in a wedding?”. I’d exclaim, ”YESSS! It’s like I broke bread with killers/sympathizers!” Then they’d laugh even more. Later- it dawned on me. It was my first time in close proximity with killers but this had been their lives since 1994.
Trust I was ready to burn shit down BUT because I can refuse nothing to my father, the apple of my eye, I decided to follow his instructions of only focusing on God’s blessings and trusting in divine retribution.
Still: I wanted to publically record every emotion so I started a public blog in 2024, wrote 401 pieces which were read 9200 times by 3800 people. Blog started off with a 30 day “rage diary” then eventually veered into other societal issues like ICE, famine, DV, etc + random facts of my daily life in these Atl streets told in a raw, honest, voice. Because in the words of Mugenga, umugabo ugenga abandi, the greatest revenge is to live and live well.
Tell your fathers and mothers with blood on their hands: they are next.
Ever at humanity’s service.
One Love,
