Rwandese or Rwandan?

Let us answer that question now once and for all, both terminologies are correct. If you really wanna impress a Rwandan person, say “Bite wa kigome we” (Translation: Hello Lovely One).

The running joke in my intimate circle has always been that I was seemingly born in the wrong culture. I tend to be more drawn to Congoleses’ “joie de vivre” and Nigerians’ “founded arrogance”. However, today my Rwandan identity was re-affirmed! I heard a Rwandan lady recounting her life’s turbulences. She quoted an apparently popular Rwandan saying that shocked and mesmerized me. “Kereka nimba ububi butera ishaba.” (Bad Looks Must Produce Good Luck). It is said of a wife who finds the other woman to be an unfit rival. Now, THIS is my kind of poetic and polished gibe. Looks like after all, I was born in the exact culture I belong to.

  1. I’ve always wondered which term was accurate, so it’s good to know both are acceptable. Murakoze!
