I am all about One Love, One Africa.
But let us make a quick diversion and compare real quick.
African parties are a vibe but I am afraid African Americans’ parties surpass us a tiny bit. For one they have that coordinated dance thing and we don’t. Also yes, they may be late but nothing ridiculous. Once attended an African concert that was legit 4hours late. Did I leave? No.
I go to many places alone – I was born alone, will die alone; figured I should probably enjoy my own company. I find African Americans more friendly to strangers. African crowds are very click-ish. Unless the men want to bed you they will not offer any courtesy. Try asking an African man you don’t know to take a picture for example. He may think you are propositioning him. Ego is on steroids so he can’t possibly imagine you skipped the cameraman to come and ask him. Because, why? Try asking an African woman you don’t know- Simple, “Hey sis, where is the bathroom” she will look you up and down as if you meant to insinuate she is the help… When I go to African American parties alone, they seem more welcoming. More family-like. The men hold doors. The women at the bar tell you which drink is their favorite.
Maybe it’s the Black Struggle in America that has made them closer? We have a different kind of struggle back home; poverty. And when a person makes it out of poverty, they wish to STEP on the population… Inkirabuheri mwarazumvise?
PS: These are of course gross generalizations not meant to be taken seriously at all. Just quick notes after hitting the streets last night… XOXO
